Hello everyone!  I hope your January 2017 is going well so far!  I have had such a busy work schedule, but I am loving it!  The end of 2016 brought a huge lifestyle change for me, and boy am I glad this change came when it did.  I started my journey towards minimalism and couldn’t feel more satisfied with my decision.  If you are reading this, I am so happy to be sharing my minimalist journey with you.  It has been such a life-changing and wonderful experience so far!  Today I just want to talk about how I got started in this journey in hopes that it may inspire you to do the same.

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up:   How It Began

If you have not heard of the book, “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up:  The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing” by Marie Kondo, then, well…where the heck have you been!  Actually, if it makes you feel better, I was introduced to this book by randomly searching YouTube videos (I don’t even remember what I was searching for) and coming across Marie Kondo folding clothes using her konmari method and decluttering homes that are a minimalist’s worst nightmare.  Her kind and gentle spirit and calming effect on her clients really drew me in, and I just had to experience what they were experiencing.  I wanted to “spark joy” in my life, and Marie Kondo was the answer.

I purchased her book on kindle and read it once through in one night, and then read it again while following her method.  Using the konmari method, I went through each category in the order she told me to.  The categories where as follows:  clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous), and sentimental items.  She stressed the importance of following this order, so I started with clothes and proceeded to go down the list until I decluttered my entire condo!  In a nutshell, I got rid of bags upon bags of items, which I mostly donated to Goodwill.  If I had to guess, I probably got rid of around 75% of my things!  I know this sounds like a lot, but I started with a closet that was vomiting clothes and an apartment where I could barely walk through some rooms.  So needlessly to say, a decluttering was much needed and much desired.

Minimalism:  A New Passion

Going through the konmari method not only decluttered my home, but also decluttered my mind.  Since then I have found a new-found love and passion for minimalism.  I have been reading blogs and watching YouTube channels centered around minimalism non-stop and have continued to tweak my home based on what I have been learning from the minimalist community.  I am still really early in my minimalism journey, but I hope to continue the process and continue to share this powerful journey with you.  Below is my first YouTube video on the topic of minimalism, complete with my closet tour after going through the konmari method.  I hope this post and video will “spark joy” for you!
